Established in 2011, the Nkok Special Economic Zone was named the world's best industrial zone by the Financial Times' 2020 FDI ranking. The Nkok Special Economic Zone (SEZ) comprises three main zones: the commercial zone, the residential zone, and the industrial zone. This special economic space is managed by 23 administrations, employing 144 people to operate a platform of nearly 6,000 people, spread across 85 production companies. The government plans to build a dry port in the Nkok SEZ to accommodate barges with a capacity of 1,000 to 2,000 tons, depending on the tides. The administration has not yet revealed when this port infrastructure will be operational.<\/p>\n

Created in June 2021, the Ikolo Special Investment Zone (ZIS) covers an area of 840 hectares, including 522 hectares protected and 318 hectares exploited. Specializing in secondary and tertiary processing, it will have 6 companies operating in the timber sector by the end of 2022. The Gabon Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) company is responsible for the development of this zone.<\/p>\n

A first container was exported in June 2022 by the Indian company Greenply, the very first structure to set up in the Ikolo GSEZ. Specializing in the production of okoum\u00e9 veneer sheets for export to Europe and other markets, Greenply plans to sell 150 to 200 TEU containers per month and employ 400 Gabonese workers.<\/p>\n

In addition to this company, three other structures are also registered in the area near Lambar\u00e9n\u00e9, a town 150 km from Libreville. The Ikolo ZIS plans to create 750 to 1,250 jobs for Gabonese people by the end of 2023 and export between 300 and 400 containers of processed wood per month, thus generating added value for the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Focused on wood processing businesses such as sawing, veneer and plywood, furniture manufacturing (solid wood and panels), paper pulp production, particle units, SEZ Ikolo is a continuation of the success of GSEZ Nkok. Today, it makes Gabon the leading African exporter and the second largest in the world of veneer sheets.<\/p>\n

This industrial hub is one of the major challenges of the 2021-2023 Transformation Acceleration Plan (PAT) put in place to return to economic growth after the pandemic. The creation of the Mpassa-Lebombi Investment Zone (ZIS) in the Haut-Ogoou\u00e9 province was announced by the government on April 14, 2022. Its purpose is to accommodate all types of businesses, with a view to carrying out industrial, commercial, and service activities in the timber and agricultural sectors. Covering an area of 1,390 hectares, it is divided into three zones: industrial, commercial, and residential. The result of a public-private partnership between the Gabonese government and the Singaporean company Olam International through the creation of a private mixed-economy company under Gabonese law, this future zone will be developed on three sites, in Mopia in the Mpassa department and in the communes of Moanda and Mounana located in the Lebombi-Leyou department.<\/p>\n

The Mpassa-Lebombi special economic zone will be the third special economic zone created in Gabon. The first two, Nkok and Ikolo, are already operational. Other zones will also be built across the country.<\/p>\n
