Gabon aims to produce 100% clean electricity by 2035. While the energy mix is expected to be dominated by hydroelectricity, solar power plant projects have multiplied in the country in recent years.

Gabon has many assets in the field of renewable energy: solar, wind, and biomass. At the African Union-European Union summit in February 2022, Head of State Ali Bongo Ondimba announced that Gabon will transition to renewable energy in the electricity sector starting in 2035.

In March 2022, the Gabonese government signed a framework agreement with Solen, a company specializing in the construction of solar power plants in Africa. It covers the construction of a 120 MW photovoltaic solar power plant in Ayemé Plaine, 30 km from Libreville. The project will be carried out in two phases of 60 MW each. The aim is to provide the population with competitive energy and specifically help resolve the problem of recurring power outages in our capital. This infrastructure is part of the Transformation Acceleration Plan and will complement the energy supply on the Estuary Interconnected Network (RIC). Gabon's ambition is to install an additional 250 megawatts across the country by 2023.

The government is already collaborating with Ausar Energy, a subsidiary of Engie Africa, to establish eight hybrid solar power plants in the Northwest regions of Bitam, Ndjolé, Makokou, Booué, Ovan, Medouneu, Minvoul, and Mékambo. Once operational, these plants will reduce annual national diesel consumption by one million liters (2,600 tons of CO2). Production costs will also be reduced by 30%.

Also worth mentioning are the Emirati Amea Power and the Turkish Desiba Energy, which are preparing the construction of two photovoltaic power plants, respectively 50 MW in Oyem and 20 MW in Doubou near Mouila.
