The construction and management were entrusted to the Singaporean multinational OLAM, through its local subsidiary GSEZ Airport Construction. Covering an initial area of 915 hectares, the future platform will have a 3,500-meter runway, a presidential terminal, a control tower, and a 3,300 m2 passenger terminal. It aims to accommodate 2.25 million passengers by 2030. To better manage its growing passenger flow, a bypass of the new airport will help relieve congestion in the Libreville-Akanda area.
The current Léon Mba International Airport takes its name from the first president of the Republic of Gabon, who ruled from 1961 to 1967. Since its construction in the 1950s, Libreville Airport has continued to expand and adapt its structure to accommodate all types of aircraft as they evolved. Twenty destinations are served by 15 airlines that offer scheduled flights from this airport. Two terminals serve to streamline traffic. Terminal 1 is the main terminal of Léon Mba Airport, allowing boarding for domestic and international flights. Spread over 16,000 m2, it can accommodate up to 1.2 million passengers per year.

Terminal 2 is reserved for regional and domestic flights operated by Afrijet. In May 2022, Léon-Mba International Airport became the first airport in Central Africa to be certified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the quality and safety of the airport's infrastructure.
Note that Gabon has adopted the biometric passport of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC).
THE REHABILITATION OF 10 PROVINCIAL AIRPORTS
In pursuit of economic diversification and performance, Gabon is focusing on air transport to make the mobility of people and goods more efficient. The Gabonese government plans to rehabilitate the country's 10 provincial airports, including those in Lambaréné, Koula-Moutou, Tchibanga, Oyem, Bitam, Franceville, Port-Gentil, Makokou, and Omboue.
Port-Gentil Airport was previously rehabilitated in 2011. Financed by the oil company Total Gabon, the work cost 73 billion CFA francs. The work involved the construction of a new 9,000 m² passenger terminal and a 1,000 m² presidential pavilion, as well as the extension and renovation of the runway, taxiways, and aircraft parking areas.
