Gabon is counting on its manganese to accelerate its development, which requires increasing investment in terms of production and transport, but also in local processing in order to increase the share of added value produced locally.
With its Moanda mine in Gabon, Eramet is the world's leading producer of high-grade manganese ore and higher value-added manganese alloys, the refined products. Operated by Comilog, a subsidiary of the group, this mine specializes in the extraction, processing, and transformation of this metal. With 25% of global manganese reserves, Moanda is one of the largest high-grade ore deposits in the world. 2021 was a successful year for Eramet due to strong production growth, driven in particular by strong Asian demand and positive sales prices.
Comilog, in which the Gabonese government holds 29% of shares, distinguished itself through the operation of the Moanda mine, which produced 7 million tonnes of manganese (an increase of 21% compared to the previous year), generating a net profit of 89 billion. The outlook is equally encouraging. In 2022, the Eramet Group will invest 134.5 billion CFA francs in Gabon to develop production and transport infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of the railway. This is in addition to the construction of the suspended port that we built to improve our logistics capabilities, which will allow us to evacuate much more mining freight.
In 2022, the Eramet Group, via Comilog, is aiming to produce 7.5 million tonnes of manganese in Gabon, enough to consolidate the world's leading position occupied by the Moanda mine in Haut-Ogooué.
