Inaugurated in November 2020 by President Ali Bongo Ondimba, La Santé Pharmacie (LSP), Gabon's first drug manufacturing plant, is the largest in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC). In 2022, it is preparing to move into the second phase of its development to guarantee Gabonese people, as well as Africans in the sub-region, access to essential medicines at competitive prices and meeting international standards.
To date, the African continent imports more than 80% of its medicines from abroad (mainly from India and China), according to the United Nations. The establishment of the generic drug production site in Gabon has therefore been hailed as a true health revolution.
Less than a year after its opening and despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the pharmaceutical factory is capable of manufacturing around thirty generic drugs (compliant tablets, capsules, ointments, and syrups) whose purchase prices are 30% to 40% cheaper than those currently circulating on the Gabonese private market. In its second phase, LSP will produce injectables and glucose, as well as antiretrovirals.

The 25,000 m² production site is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The factory imports its raw materials, mainly from Europe, while using domestic resources in a country covered with over 851,000 tons of forest.
Due to a lack of available skills in Gabon, LSP offered its own in-house training and entered into various partnerships. This is notably the case with a health school in Morocco.
To date, LSP has more than 100 employees, including 801 Gabonese nationals and 501 women. The 201 foreign nationals complement this team by contributing their respective expertise.
Santé Pharma is now capable of producing 1 million tablets per day, 150,000 bottles of syrup per day, 20,000 ointments, and 600,000 capsules per day. The company sells its medications to two private wholesalers, PharmaGabon and Ubipharm, as well as to the National Pharmaceutical Office (OPN).
