Gabon's inclusion in the "Gold List 2022" is no coincidence. The 13 national parks, 9 marine parks, and 11 aquatic reserves created under the leadership of the authorities, as well as the planned opening of Loango Lodge in 2022, presented as the first of the African Conservation Development Group's sustainable luxury lodges, motivate this choice. With more than 80% of territory covered by forest, Gabon is part of the Congo Basin, the second largest tropical rainforest and second largest green lung on the planet after the Amazon. The Gabonese landscape boasts many heavenly tourist sites.
Gabon has some of the most diverse flora and fauna in the world. There are many animal species, including the iconic grey parrots, elephants, buffaloes, silverback gorillas, leatherback turtles, antelopes, and more. Gabon also boasts a wide variety of plants. For example, there are over 8,000 different species. The uniqueness of the area is reflected in the presence of species not found elsewhere, including several charismatic animals such as the silverback gorilla, the Gabon parrot, pygmy elephants, and plants such as iboga.
The creation of 13 national parks in 2002 was an innovation that was part of the process of diversifying the national economy. The aim was to develop and promote geotourism, which supports and showcases a destination based on its geographical character, environment, culture, and heritage for the benefit of its inhabitants. Building on the "Green Gabon" pillar and in order to preserve this unique environment, Gabon has moved towards quality tourism and ecotourism.
Due to its location on the Atlantic Ocean, Gabon has over 800 km of coastline, in addition to a maritime area estimated at 265,000 km2. Due to this position, the coastal zone is home to nearly 601,000 people and a significant portion of the national economic activity. Gabon therefore has immense assets for seaside tourism.
